Wells House & Gardens
With origins tracing back to the 17th century and later transformed through the vision of renowned architect Daniel Robertson, elegant Wells House in County Wexford is a remarkable example of Ireland’s architectural and cultural legacy.
The house was built in the late 1600s by John Warren who owned more than 6,000 acres of land in the area. On his death, Warren’s properties were purchased by the Doyne family who went on to run the Wells Estate for over 260 years.
During the 1800s, the Doynes engaged renowned English architect Daniel Robertson to completely redesign the house and its surrounds. The work encompassed the façade of the house, much of the impressive interior design, the terrace garden, the arboretum and the impressive tree-lined avenue. Robertson is best known for the stunning gardens at Powerscourt, Killruddery and Johnstown Castle in addition to Lisnavagh, Dunleckney Manor and Ballydarton Castle.
In 1965, German industrialist Gerhard Rosler moved to Wells House with his family. He added self-catering cottages and a bowling alley, now the Robertson Hall. His son Uli and wife Sabine opened the estate to the public in 2012.
Now in the hands of the Sean Doyle Group, both house and gardens have been meticulously restored with input from the original owners, the Doyne family. The 480-acre estate reflects centuries of social history, craftsmanship and evolving landscape design. Its Victorian character, woodland setting, and enduring connection to local and national heritage make it an invaluable part of Ireland’s historic fabric.
Today, Wells House estate offers an extensive range of amenities — from beautifully maintained gardens and woodland walks to family‑friendly attractions, an animal farm, guided house tours in costume, adventure playground and a dynamic programme of events throughout the year.
