Waterloo House

Waterloo House in Ballyorgan, County Limerick has been formerly known as Ballyorgan Glebe and Kilflyn Rectory. A handsome and unusual building with four corner turrets, it was once the rectory to Kilflyn Church. Despite its notable architectural features, little is known about its architect or building history. Although a plaque on the rear wall states "By loan and gift to the Rev John Murphy from the Board of First Fruits A.D. 1817", the property is not recognised by First Fruits as one of theirs. In fact, other records, as well as the evidence of the house itself, suggest there was an earlier incarnation of the property. In private hands since its sale by the Church of Ireland in 1961, the current owners have been resident since 1990 and are now working to restore the grounds and woodlands surrounding the house. Plans are in place to open a low impact barn-let for visitors to the region as well as to hold events and to reinstate the kitchen garden in coming years.
