Grenane House

The Mansergh family have continuously lived in Grenane House since 1700, making it one of the oldest lived in houses by the same family in Ireland. The lands of Grenane now comprise 350 acres set in the Golden Vale, on which a stud farm is run by the present owner’s two sons.

A branch of the family originally leased the lands of Grenane from the Duke of Ormond, eventually buying the 2,000 acres in 1704. Grenane House itself was built in 1700 from the stone of the Castle where the Mansergh family had been living, and of which nothing remains. It was originally three storeys high but the top storey was removed in 1740 and the west wing built. The architect is unknown.

Both Grenane House and its gardens are protected. The gardens are home to Ireland’s only Hazel Nut Arch in addition to a beech walk with nearly every variety of beech in existence. Notably all of the plasterwork in the house is completely original and unaltered. The front windows are by James Wyatt and there are mantelpieces by both James Adam and Bossi. Among the more modern touches is a beautiful playroom completely hand-painted by Marion McDonnell of Tipperary depicting “The Mice of Brambley Hedge”.  Grenane House is south facing with wonderful views of the Galtee Mountains including the peak of Grenane from which it takes its name.
